The Christmas and New Year period is the busiest time for the Food Hub, and we wanted to share the sometimes eye-popping food stats that show the importance of what we do and the hard work that goes into our operation and the significant impact we have on both our community and the environment!

None of this would have been possible without our incredible volunteers. During this period, an astounding 286 community members stepped up to help. Our volunteer hours went up by 25% this year across the period, plus we had new people join our team which made a real difference, some will stay with us going forward – even better. It’s difficult to overstate how this generosity is the backbone of our operations, and we cannot thank each and every volunteer enough for the time they gave us this record year.

Here are the stats:

  • A total of 1,867 trays of food, averaging 117 per day between 21 Dec 25 and 6 Jan 26!
  • On our morning food runs, we rescued 19.3 tonnes of surplus food, averaging 1.21 tonnes daily. Additionally, our ad hoc collections from restaurants, small outlets, and producers reached an average of 1.32 tonnes of food rescued over the period.
  • This all added up to 21.9 tonnes of food rescued over the period.
  • That’s an amazing 21% increase on the previous year!

Everyone can imagine the positive impact on our community with all that good surplus food being distributed via our established community group network and #foodshare tables. With additional amounts of veg made into soup via our Community Kitchen project.

What a start to 2026!
