At Shrewsbury Food Hub, we’re committed to understanding the impact our work has across Shrewsbury’s many communities. One place where this impact is felt every single week is St Giles Church Hall, Sutton Way, Shrewsbury.
St Giles runs a warm and welcoming community space where local people and families can relax while children play. Alongside families, they support young adults and older adults from the local area. Each week, the Hub shares surplus food to help make this space possible.
We provide a generous selection of ready‑to‑eat items such as sliced bread, rolls, fruit, pastries, cakes, drinks, and coffee pods. The surplus good food is rescued from supermarkets and suppliers across Shrewsbury. Unsurprisingly, the favourites are often cakes, doughnuts and pastries—alongside fruit like grapes and strawberries that can be easily portioned and enjoyed straight away. Volunteers simply prepare what arrives each week and lay it out so visitors can choose what they like.
This simple offering makes a big difference. According to St Giles, the Food Hub reduces their weekly food budget by around 70–80%, dramatically lowering their operating costs. More importantly, the food helps create what they describe as “silent support”—a gentle, non‑intrusive way of caring for families who may simply need a moment of rest, kindness, or community.
When asked to describe Shrewsbury Food Hub, the team at St Giles chose three words:
Enabling • Generous • Supportive
And in their own words, “Without the food, our group would not be so well attended or enjoyed.”
Shrewsbury Food Hub is proud to support St Giles in running this valued community space. It’s a reminder to everyone in our organisation—especially our incredible volunteers—that small acts of sharing can create big ripples of support.
