Our Story

Shrewsbury Food Hub was founded in 2016 with a mission to reduce food waste for environmental and social good. Our vision is a community where food is valued and not wasted.

We estimate our redistribution efforts reach over 4500 people a week through a wide range of communities across Shrewsbury including children, elderly people, those facing homelessness or seeking refuge, living with a disability and those on low incomes or unemployed.

Redistribution Manager: A typical week

You will be working from our main depot in Battlefield, Shrewsbury. It is the heart of the food hub – Everything comes into and leaves from here. It is where our team all work from and where our volunteers gather to support all areas of our operation.

Its busy, and sometimes exceptionally busy! It is an ever-changing landscape, and you will need to relish a role that requires you to be re-active and manage your many hats and remain calm under pressure and provide a safe, but fun environment.

We save surplus food of all types, and we support Shrewsbury community groups and charities by redistributing food to them and stretching their budgets to enable them to focus on their clients and services and that means we are doing the do at the same time as thinking about it!

A day at the Food Hub can be physically heavy and mentally challenging! From planning the weekly rota to accepting food offers, meeting with your team or meeting with a new community group to unloading a pallet of potatoes whilst on the phone! – there is an emphasis on TEAMWORK in everything we do and together we make an enormous difference to our town.

Your role will be to manage our Redistribution project and ensure that we have we have the right people in the right places to deliver our targets. Ensure that our environment is a safe, our teams and our volunteers are looked after and that everything that happens is done efficiently and safely.

As a member of the senior leadership team, you will be keen to develop new business and identify and communicate where we could make efficient changes to our operation and in line with our strategic vision.

Alongside the core of the role, you will also be managing 5 paid team members who work throughout the 7 day operation carrying out the daily requirements of the project themselves or they supervise and support our Volunteer Army – leaving you to plan rota’s oversee the Health and Safety of all the logistics and work alongside the senior leadership team to ensure we are delivering all of our strategic aims and objectives.

The wider team covering warehouse and driving, communications, IT, and fundraising are fundamental to the project, and all have a role to play across our very busy operation.

You may like perfection and strive to make changes and improvements – We are all about that!, As a charity we are just heading into our 10th  year, we are learning and improving as we go, so you won’t be stepping into the finished article but you will join a large team that is committed to continually reviewing and improving what we do.

This is the sting …….……Because we match the retail sector we do work unsociable days and hours, and Bank Holidays are no exception! These are worked on a rota basis for fairness but there will be an expectation to join that rota – which includes Xmas Eve until 9pm and the week between Christmas and New year, blurs into one!
