Diners to a free lunch club at St Mary’s Church café were in for a treat last month, thanks to the @slowfooduk ‘Time for Lunch’ campaign.

Slow Food Ludlow committee member Steve Guy, aka The Hungry Guy, brought the campaign to Shrewsbury every Thursday in June to encourage people to pause for lunch – to enjoy the benefits of relaxing with something good to eat, then return refreshed to work or whatever else they were up to.

The delicious lunches, which used surplus food from the Hub, attracted office workers, friends of all ages, and parents with their tots. More than 70 people turned out for each of the free lunches.

Malcom said: “It’s a tonic. The food is beautifully cooked.”

Jasmine said: “The food is great. It’s a really, really nice idea to get people out of offices and being social. Everyone’s so friendly.”

Steve was delighted by the great feedback he received. He said: “Everyone deserves good, accessible, delicious food. Lunch should be important. We all need to take time to savour the sheer pleasure of good food. We’ve got to find a way to keep this going, the response has been too good!”

Shrewsbury Food Hub manager Tammy is also keen to find a way to work with Steve to continue the lunch clubs as they are a great way of using up surplus food for environmental and social good.
