Shrewsbury Food Hub’s Annual Review tells a story of hard work, new initiatives and above all, community.
The opportunity to reflect on what we have achieved reminds us that without support from our funders and amazing volunteers, none of this would be possible.
This is a 17% increase on the previous year.
By converting the tonnes of food we rescue to meals, it really helps us understand how what we do makes a difference.
The food we supply to our network of community groups and charities allows them to save up to 40% off their food budget.
We welcome anyone to our popular Foodshares and it provides us another route to distribute our rescued food into the community.
We were founded in 2016 and over these years we have saved 1,220 tonnes in total. WOW!
The amount of CO2 saved is equivalent to a forest the size of 50 football pitches!
The stats are impressive, but we can’t do it alone. Last year we had the joy of working with over 200 regular volunteers giving us 17,000 hours of service. Without them we couldn’t operate. In return we offer fun, friendship and work everyone can see makes a real difference every day.
Established partnerships with suppliers (retailers, manufacturers and growers), local charities and community groups as well as local business support ensures that we have access to good surplus food which we can share with the people who need it in our community.
Initiatives like Supersonic and Community Kitchen have gone from strength to strength and offer exciting ways of distributing the surplus food which improve cooking skills, increase confidence, offer balanced meals and of course, give lots of fun.
Even with all the support we have from volunteers and our suppliers, rescuing food costs money. In 2024/25, it cost approximately £1,000 per tonne of food – or 42p per meal. We raised an impressive £305,666 last year, but with rising costs each year we need to raise more. Due to rising costs, it now costs us £1,200 to resuce a tonne of food, or 50p a meal. This still represents incredible value for the impact it delivers.
Our team will continue to work hard to gain funding from the government, charitable trusts and foundations and other sources. Funding from individuals accounted for over 13.5% of our income last year and so makes a real difference.
Thanks to everyone for their generous support over the last and previous years. We are launching a Regular Giving Appeal to help us secure an additional £10,000 per year so that we can expand our community support and cover increased costs. If you are able to support us, please consider making a regular gift to help us reach our goal.
