Over the past decade, the Hub has transformed surplus food into substantial environmental and social value, redistributing 1,492 tonnes of food, equivalent to over 3.5 million meals, while preventing 4,043 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
This has generated more than £6 million in food value for communities and organisations, reaching around 4,000 people per week through a network of over 100 community groups, powered by more than 230 volunteers.
By the end of our first year in 2017 we had rescued 14 tonnes. By 2026 this was 272 tonnes.
We were so proud of 32k meals at the beginning of our journey, The annual meals provided is now equivalent to 649k and it is more than we could have imagined.
The food we supply to our network of community groups and charities allows them to save up to 40% off their food budget. Combined with the food we send to our Foodshares we estimate we are reaching around 4,000 people reached per week.
We welcome anyone to our popular Foodshares and it provides us another route to distribute our rescued food into the community.
As the cost of living continues to bite, this has become more and more important to many families living in Shrewsbury.
The amount of CO2 saved is equivalent to 180,000 grown for a year
Even with all the support we have from volunteers and our suppliers, rescuing food costs money. In 2024/25, it cost approximately £1,000 per tonne of food – or 42p per meal. We raised an impressive £305,666 last year, but with rising costs each year we need to raise more. Due to rising costs, it now costs us £1,200 to resuce a tonne of food, or 50p a meal. This still represents incredible value for the impact it delivers.
Our team will continue to work hard to gain funding from the government, charitable trusts and foundations and other sources. Funding from individuals accounted for over 13.5% of our income last year and so makes a real difference.
Thanks to everyone for their generous support over the last and previous years. We are launching a Regular Giving Appeal to help us secure an additional £10,000 per year so that we can expand our community support and cover increased costs. If you are able to support us, please consider making a regular gift to help us reach our goal.
