Cooking up community meals for Shrewsbury

Calling all cooks and food-lovers!  Do you like the idea of bringing people together over a shared meal? Or getting creative with surplus food from the supermarkets?  

 

These are just some of the ideas that will be discussed at a free workshop hosted by Shrewsbury Food Hub at 7pm on 2nd July at University Centre Shrewsbury to explore how volunteers could get a pop-up community meal or cooking club going in our town.

 

Katy Anderson, Shrewsbury Food Hub said, “The amount of food we throw away is crazy - one third of the food that we produce, at a time when so many families are struggling to put good food on the table. The idea of the meeting is to bring everyone together who is interested in the idea of cooking with leftover food. The Food Hub collects food from 19 stores every day and shares it between community groups like the Hospice and Food Bank Plus. At the weekend there is lots of surplus food not being used, so we’re calling all cooks help get this food into good use. For inspiration we have Tom from the fantastic community café OsNosh and Hannah who runs the Belvidere Good Food Club.”

 

Chef Tom Wilson from OsNosh will be sharing his experience of setting up community café in Oswestry. Tom used to volunteer with Food Cycle and Real Junk Food Café, and he’s brought the idea of turning surplus food into delicious meals to life back in his hometown. Tom explains, “we take leftover food and make it into healthy delicious meals. It’s like a Ready Steady Cook challenge every week, as we never know what we’ll have, but it always works out well. Volunteers prepare and serve the food and everyone is welcome to come. The meal is free, but people are welcome to make a donation. A real community is growing as people get to know each other over cooking and eating”.

 

Hannah Moore from Shrewsbury Youth For Christ gets young people together every week to learn how to cook. Hannah explains, “ at Belivdere Good Food Club we give young people the confidence to “ready steady cook” with leftover ingredients. This builds skills that will last them a lifetime, giving them the know-how to cook healthy meals and not waste food. They really enjoy the challenge and eating their creations”
